Who We Are

AAUW, founded in 1881, is an organization of more than 100,000 members.  AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research.  Membership is open to graduates who hold the associate, baccalaureate, or higher degree from a qualified college or university.  The Saint Louis Branch, founded more than 100 years ago, is one of six branches in the Saint Louis area that comprise the AAUW Metro Saint Louis Interbranch Council.

What We're Up To . . .

Programs are to support the full range of the AAUW mission of "education and equity for all women and girls, lifelong education, and positive societal change."  The Saint Louis Branch moved away from the format of monthly general meetings in order to take on a team project:  A study of harassment policies on Saint Louis area college campuses.  A guide was developed by our program co-vice presidents, Jan Scott and Connie Stoker, for the comparison of each school's policies.  We currently are having periodic salons to discuss current topics that are appropriate to our mission.

The Saint Louis Branch is a member of the AAUW Metro Saint Louis Interbranch Council and participates in its functions:

  • Adelante Diversity Book Group, which meets at Borders Books, Olive Street Road and New Ballas Road, Creve Coeur, MO, at 1:30 p.m. on 4th Thursdays
  • Downtown Lunch Group, which meets at new and interesting restaurants on 3rd Tuesdays
  • Annual spring luncheon and program, usually held in March
  • International Relations Lecture Series, co-sponsored with the Tuesday Women's Association of the Ethical Society of Saint Louis (January through April)

The Saint Louis Branch is also a part of AAUW of Missouri (www.aauwmo.org) and has voting rights at the annual delegate assembly held in conjunction with either a leadership conference or state convention.

Click on the above AAUW logo and view a video. Members of diverse ages and backgrounds share why they felt compelled to join AAUW and why they feel other women should join. The video also highlights AAUW's 125-year legacy, what it offers women today, and why this valued organization still has work left to do -- because equity is still an issue.

The 2009 AAUW Convention

2011

$tart $mart Workshops - The AAUW Interbranch Council is partnering with the University of Missouri Extension Service to present both the $tart $mart workshops for college women and the sessions to train women wanting to teach the program.  Workshops focus on helping college women learn effective salary and benefits negotiating skills, something often missing in their school curriculum.  AAUW nationally is a sponsor of the $tart $mart program, and we are excited for it to be implemented in our area.  Several branch members have signed up for the training and will be teaching classes over the next few years.

It's Easy to Join Our Branch!

For information on membership, contact our treasurer, Carol Davis McDonald, for information and/or a membership form.  If you would like to receive copies of the branch's newsletter, let Carol know.
